5 Minutes to Create a Better School - Green Spaces and Food

Task 4 - João Calheiros

This week the recycling weight was:

Paper - 1,00 kg
Plastic - 0,500 Kg
Glass - 0,250 kg (however in the bin were only 2 bottles)

This week was a normal week so as you can see my family produce more plastic (2 bags) than paper(1 bag) although the paper weight more than plastic. the glass normally are 1 or two bins no more.
I always recicle so this task don't came nothing new to me, was a diferent task.

Anjali Appadurai, UN Climate Change Conference

"A number of protests are being held today at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban to protest the failure of world leaders to agree to immediately agree to a deal of binding emissions cuts. Anjali Appadurai, a student at the College of the Atlantic in Maine, addressed the conference on behalf of youth delegates. Just after her speech, she led a mic-check from the stage - a move inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protests. "It always seems impossible until it's done. So, distinguished delegates and governments around the world, governments of the developed world: Deep cuts now. Get it done," Appadurai says.

Task 4 Daniel

When I came to Coimbra I've started to recycle the garbage.
My results are:

Paper and card ± 2 kg

Plastic and metal ± 1,50 kg

Glass ± 4 kg
That wasn’t a normal week because, normally, we reuse the glass bottles to put water to serve at the time of the meals and this week we decided to throw them way.
I think that the weight of the garbage it’s not much because in my house lives 7 people, so I can conclude that we not spend a lot.

Task 4 - Beatriz Martins

During this week, I, my sister, my father and my mother did the recycling experiment (task 4).
I think recycling is very important for the environment because we produce a lot of garbage and we "send" it to landfills instead of reusing, recovering, renewing and recycling it. We have to realise that if we do the right thing with our garbage we will live much longer and save our planet from unnecessary pollution. So, I think everyone should follow the rule of the 5 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recover, Renew and Recycle) and be "green"!
I have no weighing-machine at home and because of that I could't measure the weight of the garbage that we produced.

Result:
  - lots of plastic;
  - paper (mainly publicity);
  - no glass.

Task 4 - Pedro =P

Me and my family (dad, mom and twin) have been reciclyng since our birth (mine and my twin one) and this week we produce aprox.

Paper - 500g
Plastic - 1 Kg
Glass - 250g (however in the bin were only 2 bottles)

With this task I get that my family produces much more plastic waste then paper and glass but we are a green family because we recycle so this amount of garbage will not "damage the Earth or Pollute the sea" XD

Getting to Zero

"The beginning of the end of AIDS starts with you"

"The beginning of the end of AIDS starts with you". This is the slogan of a campaign by ONE and (RED), two organizations fighting against AIDS. Some of their objectives are by 2015, to be able to provide treatment to the millions more who need it, drastically reduce new infections, and virtually end the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies.
2011 marks the 30th anniversary of AIDS. Today - December 1st - is World AIDS Day.
The (2015)QUILT is a symbol of their struggle. It's a piece of digital artwork from people all over the world who are fighting for the first AIDS free generation in 30 years. Task 4 - Ana Baía

This task lasted a week or so, and it was very useful because it made me realize our need for saving the planet therefore recycling.  In a household of 3 people we didn't make too much garbage! here are the values:

Glass - 344 g
Paper - 1096 g
Plastic (fantastic) - 500g

Task 4 - Carolina Santos

Recycling Experiment

This week, there was a reality check here in the house: everyone (me and my parents) realized how much waste we produce daily, by separating more than we usually do. Thought we normally separate the different types of garbages, we usually put them on the ecopoint everyday, which means that we had never noticed this before.
As there isn't any weighting-machine in our home (i guess everyone's too afraid to know their real weight...) i couldn't weight the garbage bags, but i collected milk packages, different types of metal cans, some glass and also a lot of cat and dog food bags. I'm pretty sure that almost all of the waste is recyclable. For me, this ended up being a really interesting experience that contributed a bit to save our world!

Task 4 - Inês Ferraz

These are my results for this week:
- Paper - 500 kg
- Plastic/metal - 1,100 kg
- Glass - 3,100 kg

Me and my family - three people (and a dog)- have been recycling for about 6 years paper, glass and plastic/metal. Recently we started to recycle batteries but this week there weren’t batteries to recycle. This wasn’t a normal week because we’ve been two days out of home, but the days we were at home we recycled all we can. It was my mother who started to recycle in our home but now we all recycle everyday like a super normal thing. I think that if we all recycle the world will be a better place with no landfills and all the problems that it causes (e.g. groundwater and soil contamination). Of course it won’t solve all the environmental problems but it will help a lot and we have to start somewhere.

Task 4 - Maria Rita

This week there was no glass or batteries to recycle, but we could gather a good quantity of plastic, metal, paper and cardboard - in the end, the result was an almost full garbage bag with plastic and metal and a small bag with paper and cardboard tightly packed (I wasn't able to weigh the bags because we don't have a weighing-machine at home).
This task was really interesting to do, because it made me realize the ammount of garbage that we produce at home. Of all the household waste produced in my house, I think about 90% is recyclable, though we only recycle around 80% because of the rubbish bins in the rooms. This situation will have to change so that we can "help" a little bit more this threatened planet! After all, if we all separated the garbage, recycling would be a huge helping hand!

Taak 4 - Carla Mata

The results of the "experience" of this week, are:

Glass- 350g

Plastic & metal- 1,200 kg

Paper - 2,700 kg

In my opinion I wasn't expecting that this task would become so interesting, because I didn't know in a week, the amount of trash produced in my house would be so big, but after see the results I understood that every single of us can make a difference to our world.

Task 4- Recycling Experiment Inês Santos

I already do recycling for some time then my weekly results are:

Paper and card ± 0,500 kg

Plastic and metal ± 1,00 kg

Glass ± 0,400 kg

I think recycling is very important because if only in a week the amount of garbage is this, if we multiply it, to all over the world, we will get a significant result, so our mission is change our actions in order to preserve the Earth and make a better world. :)

Task 4 - Recycling Experiment (Gonçalo Marques)

I have always done recycling of all materials I can.
This week wasn't a exception and during it, the results were:
Plastic and Metal: 1,8kg
Paper: 4kg
Glass: 0,800kg
I don't know what percentage of the waste, produced in my home, can be recicled, but I always separate it. I also contribute to "Projeto Tampinhas" and in my grandmothers houses, the waste is used to fertilize the land (organic waste) or to feed the animals.
I really live respecting the 4Rs Politic and I think all people must do the same!
The world is in danger because some people pollute it a lot without thinking in what they are doing and without any kind of worry with other humans and animals.
In my opinion, people who don't recycle, only because they don't want do it, should be really punished.
If we don't protect the planet, we will assist to the end of it. And it will be our end too!

Don't waste time! Start recycling know!

Genetically Modified Food

“Genetic Modification is a threat to food security, especially in a changing climate. The introduction of genetically manipulated organisms by choice or by accident grossly undermines sustainable agriculture and in so doing, severely limits the choice of food we can eat.” (http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/what-we-do/Food/)

Task 4 - Recycling Experiment (Miguel)

During a week, from November 19 to November 26, I, with the active collaboration of my household (a total of four), made the selective separation of materials.
If it wasn't for this task, I would have never thought that so much garbage could be produced in my house!
Apart from materials that cannot be recycled, from breakfast to dinner time, liquid yogurt bottles, milk cartons, water bottles, rice and sugar packets, among others, are accumulated.
The results of this week’s work are:
Paper and card ± 0,650 kg
Plastic and metal ± 1,200 kg
Glass ± 0,400 kg

After this task, I was really impressed with the waste produced in a house inhabited by four people (2 teens and 2 adults), during a week. Assuming that this is more or less the amount of waste produced in a home, during a week, a lot of garbage is produced by 7 billion people, around the world, every year. If all this household garbage was recycled, we would, without a shadow of doubt, live on a better planet!
So recycle! Protect the life of our planet! Safeguard your life!

Task 4 - Recycling Experiment

Rubbish collected in a household where:
- 3 people and 2 pet dogs live
- 16 meals were prepared or cooked

Time of experiment: 8 days (from 16 to 23 November 2011).

Rubbish produced:

Plastic and metal: milk cartons, Coca - Cola and water bottles, yogurt pots, rice, sugar and spaghetti bags, mushroom and pea cans, among others.

Paper: cereal, chocolate and egg boxes, newspapers and magazines, among others.

Rubbish weight:

Plastic/metal: 0.294kg
Paper: 0.302kg

There were no glass items, no batteries or light bulbs and no electrical gadgets sent to the dustbin.
All organic waste produced was kept in the ordinary bin but was not properly taken care of. I mean it was not composted.

After eight days sorting out the rubbish produced in my home, I really believe that we (my parents and I) are a drop in the ocean of rubbish.
The world would be much cleaner if all people produced rubbish as we do.

Back to the start

Sustainability is one of our main worries today (or at least it should be). It's time to rethink our actions, learn with our mistakes and change for the better.

Task 4 Recycling Experiment

This task requires the involvement of your household.
It is going to be quite simple: during a week, separate the garbage you produce at home and keep the one that can be recycled (paper, glass, metal, plastic, batteries, etc.). Weigh it to check the amount from your total garbage that can be recycled (Weigh different types of garbage separately - plastic/metal, glass, paper, etc.).
Document your experiment with pictures and write a brief report on it.

Our planet seen from the International Space Station

This is a video suggestion I got from National Geographic. It's a " time-lapse flyover made with NASA photos taken 240 miles above Earth from the International Space Station.". Once more: our planet is really beautiful!

TASK 3 - Carla Mata

Before answering task 3 I'd like to apologize for the method of answering. Apparently my internet browser doesn't save the Blogger cookies, therefore it doesn't allow me to post any comments unless it is posted in a particular way, not able to be activated by me. So, I decided that it was best just post my comment directly on the blog.

As any National Geographic documentary, this video proved to be of most interest. Not only it shows the greatness of the number 7 billion using lots of curious information, as it also shows the importance of its impact on Earth.
This number of people was supposed to be achieved in 31st October, I think. The population rate has been increasing seriously... Enough to scare us about fit in all of us 7 billion: even though it seems that shoulder-to-shoulder we could fill Los Angeles (showing us that space is not what we should be concerned about), the 5 born people to 2 deaths per second ratio alerts us to the balance problem.
If the population is increasing every second and humans are living longer and the longer. However there seems to be less and less resources. The way people keep spending energy, water and so on, as the world revolved around them, creates unbalance for our Earth and makes us wonder if will get to see the 9 billion video in 2045.
Each of us is one of 7 billion reasons to care for our planet and its 7 billion human inhabitants. We may think that the choices we make aren't important - we're one out of 7 billion - but they're different for everybody. But, if you think about it, they'd do a big difference if you multiplied it by 7 billion, specially if they were the right ones.
In my opinion, what we need is more education on the matter of useful resources and the correct way to use them in a sustainable way so we could learn what choices to make and, that way, spare and protect the only planet blessed with the gift of life on the whole Solar system: the Earth

One More Encouragement

Hey everyone! While i was searching the web I found this images with some funny sentences about our planet! Is there any sentence that makes you realize (even more) that we need to help planet Earth ? Tell us!

Task 2 - Weather Rapport, Carla Mata

Hey! Even though it's a bit late I still made it time to upload the video.

As I've been a bit entusiastic over the new BBC series "Sherlock" while I was looking for inspiration and listening to the poem, this idea came to mind. Since they're both British I thought it fit even better in this task.

I hope you enjoy it!

Task 2 - Environment poetry video

Levi Tafari, a British poet, has some great poems on environmental issues. You can check some here.
One of the fabulous things about poetry is that each of us create our own "pictures" in our mind as we read/listen to it. Share does "pictures" with us! How? Choose one of Levi Tafari's poems and create a video to illustrate it.
Here are some of the resources you can use to create your video:

My Footprint

I think I need to do some adjustments, like turn off the lights or maybe do the same as Carolina said and start working in a project to build another planet.
